Driving Junior Golf
Dear Members,
Please find below interviews by Dr. S. Rosswag with Anders Forsbrand and Marina Stuetz, who had the opportunity to train with him in Austria.
WJGS: “Anders, you were one of the first Swedish golf professionals to make a major impact on the European Tour (Anders Forsbrand`s bio). What are the differences between junior golf nowadays versus your junior experiences?
Anders Forsbrand: “There are a lot of great opportunities for the juniors today. They have much more possibilities to get very good coaching on the golf swing and physical training. This was limited at my time.”
WJGS: “What would be your recommendations for juniors regarding their practice routine?”
Anders Forsbrand: “I strongly believe there are separate practice and tournament routines for practice. Physical training you do harder and more of when you are home and practicing compare to when you are on the road and playing. Tournament playing is something each player will have to get to know themselves better and see how many events they can play in a row and also in a year. One very important part is that when you practice hard you have to rest just as hard. The body needs the rest. “
WJGS: “What are your comments on injury prevention?”
Anders Forsbrand: “I think that is why you exercise so you can play longer.”
WJGS: “You are on our WJGS advisory board. What are your goals for the WJGS tournaments and what type of competition is most important for juniors to prepare for professional golf and for life?”
Anders Forsbrand: “The goal of WJGS for me is to make golf a world sport and see the game grow though out the world. It is very difficult to explain that when you turn professional you are your own company and you are the boss. When you are an amateur you have people that will help you all the time and suddenly you have to do it yourself or pay someone to do it. And you are more or less told where to go and play by your federation and when you are professional you choose if you can. You have to work your way up the rankings to be able to play on the bigger tours in the world. “
WJGS: “You come to Austria regularly to train and coach the Austrian Golf Federation team players. During this time the Austrian elite junior golfers have the possibility to play with the professional golfers. Driving, long iron game, short game and course management, where are the differences in their skill level compared to the professionals? “
Anders Forsbrand: “The pros are more or less better in every area. Every player have their own skill that they are really good at and might be lacking in other areas. It is also in just how you practice they need help.”
WJGS: “Marina Stuetz, the winner of the year 2009 World Junior Golf Series has the possibility to train with you. What are her strengths?
Anders Forsbrand: “Wow. She has a big drive ( 310 yards). She is very determent and that will take her a long way. Her golf swing is very good. Her short game can get a lot better especially the wedge game. For being as young as she is she is very developed.”
WJGS: “Anders, the future of girls` golf, where should the journey go?”
Anders Forsbrand: “I think now with the new Director for the LPGA it has a very good chance to grow. There are a lot of great girls playing now. I would say 10 really good ones and also fun to watch, which was not the case a few years ago. It is a lot easier sell today than it was then.”
WJGS: “Thank you, Anders for all your support and we are looking forward to work with you together in the future.
Interview with Marina Stuetz:
WJGS: “Marina, you are our last year overall winner, tell me your experience of your first year WJGS competition.”
Marina: “It was a pleasure for me to join this series. I really had lots of fun at all of these three tournaments. The first tournament in Iceland was a great experience, it is a wonderful country. Germany was as last year wonderful and I always enjoy it to play there. America was a completely new experience, the Ocean course is one of the toughest Golf Courses I’ve ever played. The happier I was to play good there. “
WJGS: “Your golf club is in Kitzbuehl, Austria, usually well known as a ski paradise in Europe, did your golf interest start there? “
Marina: “My interests started in Linz, where I and my parents are also members. But everything started when I was young. My grandparents took me sometimes with them to the course (My grandmother is three times Austrian Champion so it is a bit of a family tradition :-) ). But I went to the course because I just wanted to drive golf car.”
WJGS: “What are your key milestones in your young golf life? “
Marina: “- Cut at the Ladies European Tour in Austria 2009
- 5 times Austrian Champion
- 1st World Junior Golf Series”
WJGS: “How important is support by your family for you?”
Marina: “I am lucky to have parents as mine are. They support me in everything and everywhere I need them.”
WJGS: “How do you motivate yourself to carry on with your practice? “
Marina: “Practicing is just fun for me; I do not have to motivate myself to practice.”
WJGS: “School education, how does this match with your time consuming golf sport?”
Marina: “I am in a private school and quite good and also have a special arrangement with our headmaster to get free for my tournaments.”
WJGS: “Tell me your goals for this year golf performance, please.”
Marina: “Make the Cut at the Ladies European Tour in Austria. Play at the World championship in Argentina. Winning the Austrian championship and the WJGS.”
WJGS: “Thank you for being with the WJGS. If the active volcano on Iceland allows us, we'll see you there end of June with the other participants. We wish you the very best for your future. “
